The school year starting in 2019 will be implementing Flex Learning on days of inclement weather, when it’s not safe for students to come to school. Below you will find very basic plans for the first 3 Flex Learning days (FLD). These are very basic and may potentially be altered to better suit the needs of each specific grade level. Prior to the onset of Winter, I will provide each student with a hard copy handout for each of the potential FLD’s. If you have any specific questions please contact myself by either email or telephone.

Science- Flex Learning Day  assignment #1                       Name ______________

This assignment is the 1st flex learning assignment. There are two things that need to be noted. You must convert your measurements into metric. If you fail to do this you will lose points. In addition you will need to take a picture of the container you used. If you have any trouble you can call my room at school or email me. My school phone will eventually transfer to my cell phone. 218-596-1843

If you lose this sheet you can find it on my page of the school’s website. I will also email it to all students.

Go to U-H website, staff, high school, science, Herbst, Flex Day Plan on left side of page

Procedure

-Find a container and measure it’s dimensions.

-Fill the container with snow.

-While the snow is melting, use your measurements, or creative method, to determine the volume of your container.

-Volume of a square container is Length x Width x Height

-Volume of a round container is 3.14 x radius squared x height of the container.

-Once melted, determine the volume of the liquid water in the container.

-You can do this by using the previous calculations, or pour the water into a measuring cup.

-Calculate the percent of water content in the snow by dividing the volume of liquid water by the volume of snow.

NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR MEASUREMENTS IN METRIC

Part 1:

Describe the container you used. ______________________________________________

1.  Take a picture of the container YOU used.

2.  What is the shape of the container you used?   (Square/Rectangular or Circular)

3.  Enter the dimensions of your container and dimensions of liquid water.

You must convert your measurements into metric. If you don’t remember how to do metric conversions, you will need to use your resources to make these conversions.

(2.54cm = 1 inch) (1cm3 = 1mL) (29.6mL = 1oz)

If your container is square/rectangular use option A or if it’s round use option B.

____________________________________________________________________________

Option A: volume of a Square/Rectangular container

Length______   x  Width_______ x Height_______ = ________cm3  which is = to  ________mL

Enter the dimensions of the liquid water once the snow melted

Length______   x  Width_______ x Height_______ = ________cm3  which is = to  ________mL

___________________________________________________________________________________

Option B: volume of a Round/Cylindrical container

3.14 x radius2 x height (3.14 x radius x radius x height)

3.14 x _______cm2 x _______cm  = _________ cm3  which is equal to  ________mL

Enter the dimensions of the liquid water once the snow melted

3.14 x _______cm2 x _______cm  = _________ cm3  which is equal to  ________mL

___________________________________________________________________________________

4.  Caculate the % of liquid water in the snow.

Liquid _______mL divided by solid _______ml  X  100 _________%

Science- Flex Learning Day assignment #2                        Name ______________

This assignment is the 2nd flex learning assignment. For this assignment you will need to repeat the steps you used for the last “flex day”, and take it a step further. There are two things that need to be noted. You must convert your measurements into metric. If you fail to do this you will lose points. In addition you will need to take a picture of the container you used as well as the filter you have made, which will be explained in the procedure below. If you have any trouble you can call my room at school or email me. My school phone will eventually transfer to my cell phone. 218-596-1843

Procedure part 2

-Place the coffee filter you received into a cup or bowl

-Create a filtering system to filter out the small particles from the melted snow. You may need to do some research and use your problem solving skills to create a filtering system.

-Slowly pour the melted snow (water) through the filter

-Evaluate the materials that have been filtered from the snow

-Create a list of observations you have made about the materials you filtered out of the snow

2.  Using your observation skills, list some observations about your filtered material. If you aren’t sure what “observation” is, use your resources to learn about scientific observations.

Science- Flex Learning Day assignment #3                        Name ______________

Plan Outline

-Use FLD#3 handout

-Using the measuring stick provided

-Push the measuring stick in the snow and ensure it’s stable

-Record the initial depth of the snow

-Every hour, record the change in snow depth

-After 4 hours of recording (4 measurements) create a graph of your choosing, using the recorded data.

-Note: the measurements must be taken in metric

-If your measuring stick is in inches you will have to calculate the metric conversion.

-1inch = 2.54 centimeters
